No Wrong Answer

In marketing there’s a lot of pressure to “get it right”. It’s understandable that you want a homerun every single inning but it doesn’t always happen that way. It’s ok. Really.

Getting it wrong is also getting it right, here’s why:

  • It creates data. You get to look at what didn’t work and that’s money in the bank. Data gives you insight that you can use to inform your next move.
  • It helps you adjust your message and focus on different parts of the story! What doesn't connect gets you closer to what DOES connect.
  • It creates an opportunity to have a deeper conversation. Put yourself in the shoes of your intended audience. How would you feel being communicated to in the way that you are communicating? Is it a turn-on or a turn-off?
  • If you can look at a marketing flop as informational, it relieves the pressure to be “right”. That’s freedom baby! You can throw spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. Just don’t blow your budget.

Marketing is nuanced. It’s paying attention to what is trending and what people are saying, then figuring out if you’re still solving a problem. Sometimes the goal shifts.

If you find yourself wondering why your marketing isn’t landing, go back to basics. Look at your messaging. Are you using language that engages people, or is it dry and unyielding? Are you presenting the most authentic version of your story? And lastly, what are people saying? Are they confused by your offer? Can you explain it in one or two sentences? Are you appealing to their emotional state?

Remember, there is no wrong way to market; you can always adjust, refine and get better. Marketing is a choose-your-own-adventure novel, and your ending hasn’t been written yet.

Don’t you feel better?
